9. Argentina
by Elena Lanza

Argentina is bordered by Chile in the west, Uruguay in the east, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil in the north, and the South Atlantic Ocean in the south. The second largest country in South America after Brazil, Argentina ranks as the world’s eighth largest country. The Andes, the longest and also one of the highest mountain ranges in the world, is Argentina’s natural border with Chile. The climate is not the same throughout Argentina: in the southern part it is cold since it is closer to the Antarctic, and in the central region of the mountains the weather is mild. And did you know that the largest herb in the world, Puja raimondii, grows in this region? It can live for one hundred years! The highest mountain in all of South America, Cerro Aconcagua, is found in Argentina.

When you visit Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, you will be surprised to find a European-like city right there in the middle of South America. The Río de la Plata flows right through Buenos Aires and July is the coldest month of the year there! If you like dancing, you can learn how to dance tango there, or you may visit the colorful quarter of La Boca. You may also visit the President’s house which is not white, but pink!

The Pampas are the fertile plains of the country where you will see the gauchos, the Argentine cowboys. South of the Pampas is the Patagonia region where there are river valleys, a desert and mountains, all in one region. You may also go on a whale watching tour. If you like skiing, you should go to Bariloche, but if you like waterfalls, you should visit the Cataratas del Iguazú, taller and wider than the Niagara Falls. If you would like to look at pictures of the falls, go to http://www.iguazuargentina.com/, and enjoy the view!
