9. German Regional Traditions and Cuisine

Germans dress like any modern European or American, but they do wear their traditional clothing on special days or festivals in some parts of Germany such as Bavaria. The men wear shorts called Lederhosen (leather stockings) with embroidered suspenders and knee socks. The women wear full gathered skirts called dirndls, usually with white blouses and embroidered belts.

Many of Germany's festivals are tied to their music traditions. The composer Richard Wagner built an opera house in Bayreuth in Bavaria which to this day continues to host the Bayreuth Wagner Festival every summer. Munich's annual opera festival happens each July. Freiburg hosts a Musikfest every June that features jazz, folk and other musical forms. Other festivals are tied to old traditions that honor the changing seasons, such as Maibaum (May tree). This is a southern German, spring tradition that involves the felling of a tall pine tree, a pole-raising ceremony, dancing and partying. Weinfeste (wine festivals) take place in various wine-growing regions such as Franconia, the Rhine, the Mosel and the southwestern Baden wine region

As for German cuisine, the country is best known for its Wurst (sausage). Sausage-making came into being as a way to preserve meat, back when refrigeration was not an option. The name sausage comes from the Latin word for salt. Today in Germany there are still hundreds of different kinds, depending on the region, since every part of Germany had its own way of making sausage.

There is also a huge variety of bread in Germany, probably over 200 different kinds, many of them made from whole wheat or rye. Many people like to buy their bread daily, from the local Bäckerei

There are about 1,200 breweries in Germany, places where beer is made. There is one at Weihenstephan that dates back to the 11th century. Germans still love their beer and some beer halls can seat hundreds of people. Beer gardens are another place to gather with friends and family to share a meal and drink beer. Kids go to beer gardens, too and usually drink orange soda/pop, sometimes mixed with cola and called Spezi.
